  15. <p>An explosion in San Diego suggests Iranian retaliation
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    How long is the reach of foreign terrorists? For years the
  18. FBI as well as private U.S. experts has offered a soothing
  19. answer: while Americans abroad are vulnerable, there is little
  20. danger at home. But last week Oliver Revell, the FBI's second
  21. ranking official, told a congressional subcommittee that a "hard
  22. core" of 300 among the more than 10,000 Iranians who have come
  23. to the U.S. as students bear careful watching. Some, he said,
  24. are members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard whose real interests
  25. are far from academic.

  27. <p>    Two days after Revell's warning in Washington, Sharon
  28. Rogers, wife of U.S. Navy Captain Will Rogers III, was driving
  29. alone through San Diego on her way to her job as a
  30. schoolteacher. As her white Toyota van was stopped for a red
  31. light, a bomb exploded from underneath. Just before the vehicle
  32. burst into flames, Mrs. Rogers jumped out, shaken but unharmed.
  33. The van was gutted by the blast. Shards of metal had pierced its
  34. roof, barely missing her head. The significance of the bomb,
  35. which may have been triggered by remote control, almost
  36. certainly lay with Captain Rogers. He is commander of the U.S.S.
  37. Vincennes, the guided-missile cruiser that shot down an Iranian
  38. airliner over the Persian Gulf last July 3, killing all 290
  39. people aboard. Rogers gave the order to fire missiles at the
  40. plane in the mistaken belief that it was an Iranian jet fighter
  41. attacking his ship.

  43. <p>    The FBI and naval investigators rushed to the Rogers' home
  44. in San Diego to check for other explosives. Guards were
  45. assigned to Captain and Mrs. Rogers, who went into hiding. They
  46. had received anonymous death threats shortly after the airliner
  47. tragedy. In July, Mrs. Rogers got a threatening call from
  48. someone she thought sounded Middle Eastern. "Are you the wife
  49. of the murderer?" the caller asked. When the Vincennes returned
  50. to its San Diego port in October, the ship's crew was ordered
  51. to be on alert for possible attacks when off the ship.

  53. <p>    If the bomb was intended as retribution for the Iran Airbus
  54. tragedy, it was probably not the first such act of revenge.
  55. Various Iranian groups claimed, and investigators now widely
  56. assume, that the explosive device that blew up Pan Am's Flight
  57. 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in December was also a retaliatory
  58. strike. That resulted in the death of 270 people, mostly
  59. Americans. The prevailing theory among investigators is that the
  60. plan to destroy Flight 103 originated among Iranian
  61. Revolutionary Guards and was carried out by the Popular Front
  62. for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command.

  64. <p>    Other evidence that interlocked terrorist groups are
  65. growing bold enough to strike in the U.S. came last April. Yu
  66. Kikumura, identified by federal prosecutors as a member of the
  67. Japanese Red Army, was arrested on the New Jersey Turnpike with
  68. pipe bombs designed to injure humans rather than damage
  69. buildings. He carried maps pinpointing targets in New York City.
  70. Prosecutors claimed his intended attack would have occurred on
  71. the second anniversary of the 1986 U.S. bombing of Libya. For
  72. unsuspecting Americans, the battle against international
  73. terrorism may be coming close to home.
